Want a unique gift that is both practical and quick to make? You may consider these easy, crochet nesting baskets.

Nesting baskets are easy and make a wonderful gift to give at baby showers or house warming parties. You can add small, practical items to the smallest basket and use the baskets themselves as the vessel for the gift. I recently went to a baby shower and stuffed the baskets with baby wipes, pacifiers, rattles, shampoo, and lots of other useful baby goods. It was definitely a hit at the shower! Also, after taking out the items from the baskets to stock the nursery, the recipient can use the baskets to store other items such as diapers, onesies, or receiving blankets at various places within the nursery for easy access.

Materials Needed:

  • #7 Super Bulky size yarn (I used approx. 200 g/66 yds for the small, 300 g/100 yds for the medium, and 425 g/140 yds for the large). The brand I used was called Stitch & Story in the colors: Natural Oak, Pink Peony, and Red Maple, respectively).
  • 19 mm size crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Darning Needle
  • Stitch Marker (optional)

Abbreviations:

Hdc- Half Double Crochet

Sl St- Slip Stitch

St- Stitch

Measurements:

Small- 6 inches in diameter base x 5.5 inches in height

Medium- 8 inches in diameter base x 6 inches in height

Large- 10 inches in diameter base x 6.5 inches in height

*Note: You can use any size yarn with the recommended hook size for that yarn (according to the label) to create your baskets. Just know that if you use a different size yarn/hook, it will alter finished dimensions.

Instructions:

Basket size instructions are written in this order: Sm (Med, Lg).

Create a magic ring.

Round 1: Place 10 (10, 10) Hdcs inside the magic ring. Sl st to the first Hdc. Ch. 1. [10 (10, 10) Hdcs].

Round 2: Place 2 Hdcs inside each st. Sl st to first Hdc. Ch. 1 [20 (20, 20) Hdcs].

Round 3: Place *2 Hdcs inside the first st. Place 1 Hdc in the second st*. Repeat * to * until the end of the round. Sl st to the first Hdc. Ch 1. [30 (30, 30) Hdcs].

Stop here if making the small basket & skip to round 6. Continue on if making the Medium or Large sizes.

Round 4: Place *2 Hdcs into the first st. Place 1 Hdc into the next two sts*. Repeat * to * until the end of the round. Sl st to the first Hdc. Ch 1. [30 (40, 40) Hdcs].

Stop here if making the medium basket & skip to round 6. Continue on if making the Large size.

Round 5: Place *2 Hdcs into the first st. Place 1 Hdc into the next three sts*. Repeat * to * until the end of the round. Sl st to the first Hdc. Ch 1. [30 (40, 50) Hdcs].

You will no longer be doing any increases. You should have a base of 30 (40, 50) Hdcs & will now be making the sides/wall of your basket. Each round from here on out will have the same number of Hdcs as your base.

Round 6-9 (10, 11): Hdc into each st until the end of the round. Sl st to the first Hdc. Ch 1. [30 (40, 50) Hdcs].

Round 10 (11, 12): Sc into each st. [30 (40, 50) Hdcs].

Making the Handles:

Ch 5 (6, 7). Skip 3 (4, 5) & “anchor” your chain down to the rim of the basket (to your right side) by sl st’ing it to the body. Ch 1.

Row 1: Sl st into each ch. Fasten off.

Now, count 10 (14, 18) sts to get to the other side of your basket and do the same as above to create the second handle. If you need a visual, you can watch my YouTube video linked here.

Weave in all your ends. Affix a label, if desired.

That’s it! It’s that easy!
